“The centipede when asked which
leg it would move
ended in a ditch.”
Ogden Nash
A professional violinist wanted help because of increasing pain in his shoulders. He loved his music but was seriously considering stopping because the shoulder tension was escalating. He found it easy, as any musician does, to go into trance - to become focused and absorbed - and showed all the expected physiological changes that go with trance - slower breathing, smoother face, changed eyelid blinking - and was attentive to his experience as i offered the idea that he had been playing the violin for so many years that the violin had learnt the music, and so all he needed to do was to tuck the violin under his chin and stand back to listen to the violin playing the music. He could notice sometimes that the bow was moving across the strings, and the fingers of his left hand were moving, but he could really enjoy listening to the music that the violin was playing.
After this single experience, he was able to continue his career, free of shoulder pain.
