What is reflection? If we look in a mirror, we have the chance to see something new, something that was transparent previously. When we review [look again] a session with a client, we have the opportunity to allow something that we overlooked to become visible.
It seems obvious to me that the more we see, the greater the options are, so can the value of reflection be doubted?
For me the question is what we do with our seeing, with our listening, with our willingness to allow something to come out of transparency and become a possibility.
Do we need to document the new options, be aware of them, even measure them? Scott Miller’s work about excellence says we can move towards excellence by becoming aware, measuring then engaging in deliberate practice based on these measurements.
Fernando Flores spoke about “sensitivities” emerging through recurrent experiences without the need for conscious awareness - evolving organically rather than intentionally.
Erickson said that the freedom required adapting - learning and also emphasised observing, accepting, and utilising so we can then respond naturally to what is happening rather than understanding, conceptualising, and then applying these abstractions.
I’m for honouring the mystery and actively avoiding any consistent understanding.
